Ashtanga Conference Notes on Sharath Jois Speech in Shala, Mysore 29/12/2013 – Let Go Off Your Emotions

So yesterday Sharath spoke about the role of asana and physical practice for our health and well-being. During the week, Eddie Stern translated and released a transcript of a lecture that Guruji gave in Bangalore, in 1977 and Sharath’s speech yesterday seemed influenced by the same topic. He started by saying: “We all come to yoga through asana. Asana is very fascinating! There are as many asanas as living beings, but only Ishvara (the supreme being/God) knows all the asanas”.

Another question related to sensations we may have in yoga practice. Sharath cautioned us to distinguish between two kinds of joy we may experience. There’s the type of joy that may arise from external things – a reaction to things happening outside of us. Like getting something we’ve longed for – material stuff. Then there’s joy that comes from within and which cannot be measured in monetary terms. It’s like when you go into nature and there’s nothing but you and nature – yet you do not need anything else. Or it’s when you are entirely submersed in your yoga practice and you don’t wish for anything else.
